The annual Hatfield Memorial Lectures were instituted under the terms of a trust deed executed by the University of Sheffield in 1944 to commemorate the life and work of Dr William Herbert Hatfield. The first lecture was presented by Dr George B Waterhouse, Professor of Metallurgy Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in May 1946. This is the first in a series of volumes which will bring together all the available lectures based on broad subject groupings. As well as the first lecture, Volume 1 includes contributions from distinguished authors covering the broad subjects of Properties and Behaviour, and Applications.
