Do deaf people have access to cochlear implantation if they need it?

Cochlear Implants International, Supp 1, March 2013, entitled “Access to Cochlear Implantation”, is available open access to download.

Organised by the American Cochlear Implant Alliance, the supplement brings together the experiences and perspectives of cochlear implant clinicians, educators and advocates from Belgium, China, Japan, the UK, and the US. The papers explore why so many children and adults who could benefit from cochlear implants are not receiving the intervention in their country.

Speech, Language and Hearing is a peer-reviewed journal welcoming submissions from clinicians and researchers who work with any aspect of normal or disordered speech, language, or hearing. The journal is multidisciplinary in nature with manuscripts accepted from all professional and scientific disciplines but particularly those in the areas of linguistics, psychology, education, audiology, speech-language pathology, and medicine. The principal criteria for acceptance are significance of the topic or experimental questions, conformity to rigorous research, originality, scholarship, and clarity of writing.

Over the next three years, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is recruiting paediatric registrars and consultants to undertake 6 - 12 month placements in hospitals in east and west Africa. Through this sharing of skills, and the provision of badly needed clinical training to sub-Saharan doctors, we are aiming to improve the quality of care in the countries where it is most needed and build lasting links between the UK and poorly-resourced health institutions overseas.
