SPECIAL ISSUE: Access to Cochlear Implantation
‘Access to Cochlear Implantation’, an open-access supplement to Cochlear Implants International, provides a unique insight to the issues of access to cochlear care, reviewing the diversity and important commonalities of cochlear implant availability in five countries: Belgium, China, Japan, the UK and the US.
The supplement explores why so many children and adults who could benefit from cochlear implants are not receiving the intervention. Utilisation by children varies greatly with only 50% of eligible children in the US receiving cochlear implants compared with 90% or more of children in many European countries. Adult utilisation of cochlear implants was 5% or less across all five countries examined.
The full supplement (five original research papers) is available open access for download.

SPECIAL ISSUE: SCIRehab Project
The SCIRehab Project used practice-based evidence research methodology to investigate inpatient rehabilitation practices for acute spinal cord injury. Each component of SCI rehabilitation was defined and classified in Phase 1 (JSCM, June 2009); treatment times were analyzed in Phase 2 (March 2011). The final phase, Phase 3 (Nov 2012), details the associations between the interventions and patient outcomes at discharge and 1 year post-injury. The results provide an in-depth look at practice-based rehabilitation practices that can inform the direction of further research and guide clinicians in selecting interventions for patients with acute SCI.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Health and Safety in the Informal Labor Market
A large and growing percentage of the world's workers labor in the informal sector. Many informal jobs and the poverty surrounding them present special risks and challenges for these workers, which hence presents a challenge for researchers hoping to understand the hazards faced by workers and the most effective methods to ensure healthy work.
To expand understanding of this essential issue, the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health is calling for the submission of papers addressing the informal sector.
