Are Maney journals peer reviewed?
Yes, all Maney journals are peer reviewed. The peer review process is rigorously maintained, and is an integral part of the evaluation of submitted papers. All journals have international Editorial Boards and a list of extensive contacts to assist in this process. Further information on the specific features of the refereeing procedures for each journal is available via its Instructions for Authors. For more information about Maney’s policy regarding peer review please visit click here.

How do I know if my paper is suitable for submission?
Before submitting a paper, please read the Aims and Scope of the journal. These outline the subject area coverage and type of material included. These are described in the introduction to each journal's homepage (select the homepage of the journal you wish to submit to by clicking here). If you are in doubt as to whether the subject of your paper is appropriate, please contact the Editor to discuss its outline or abstract. The Instructions for Authors for each journal also provide details of the type of papers accepted, and whether, for example, reviews or longer papers are published.
You may also find it useful to look at the tables of contents and abstracts of recent issues online to see the kind of material published previously. A full list of the journals available online, with links, is available here.
Why does Maney ask authors to assign their copyright to the journal and what rights do they have after publication?
It is a condition of submission and publication in Maney journals that papers must be original works that have not been published previously in the same or similar form and are not being considered for publication elsewhere. Copyright in all papers must be assigned to the copyright holder of each publication (often a learned society or university, rather than Maney), although authors retain certain rights.
It is important for any publisher to have strong copyright and permissions policies in order that it can properly protect the interests of the authors and editors whom it serves. Maney Publishing acts on behalf of the societies for whom it publishes to help ensure that the rights of authors, societies and Maney are protected whilst fulfilling our obligation to disseminate knowledge as widely as possible.
Authors retain certain rights after the assignment of copyright has taken place:
Maney will never unreasonably withhold permission for an author to republish his or her own material, subject to acknowledgement of the original place of publication. In all cases the author should contact permissions@maney.co.uk for an official letter of permission. There are various instances where authors may reuse their work without seeking additional permission from Maney, so long as no commercial use is made of the article. Please click here for full information.
As an author, how can I use the Eprint of my article?
Authors receive a screen-resolution PDF file (Eprint) of the published version of their paper (except papers published in Neurological Research) that they may circulate to colleagues, but may not use for commercial purposes or place into their own personal, institutional or subject specific repository. However, the pre- and post-print versions of an article may be posted in repositories, subject to full acknowledgement of the journal. Orders for digital offprints may be made at the time proofs are distributed. Please visit the Copyright and Permissions page in the Author area of the Maney Publishing website for full details, including exceptions to this policy. More information is also included in the Copyright Assignment Form distributed to authors with their proofs. A template of this form can be downloaded from the author copyright and permissions area.
Please click here for full information.
I am happy to assign copyright of the article text to the journal copyright holder, but can I retain copyright of my own images that are published within it?
If you do not wish to assign the copyright of your own images in the manuscript to the journal copyright holder along with the rest of the article, this can be accommodated. Please click here for full information.
What do I do about copyright assignment if I am a government employee or other organisation who can not assign copyright?
It is a condition of publication that copyright of articles is assigned to the journal, but there are certain exceptions to this rule. Please click here for full information.
I would like my paper to be published as an open access work so that it is available for all to read without a subscription. Is this possible?
Yes, publishing an open access (MORE OpenChoice) paper is possible in the Maney journals listed here. Click here for article charges and information on how MORE OpenChoice operates.
How do I know if the journal I want to submit to has an online submission, tracking and refereeing procedure?
Please select from the list below, or consult the homepage of the journal you want to submit to for the relevant link.
How do I submit images and tables with my article?
For any journal that does not use the Editorial Manager™ online submission, illustrations and tables should be submitted on separate pages and numbered sequentially using arabic numerals for figures.
All images and tables must have a caption and source. Within the text, figures and tables should be referred to by number (e.g. Figure 1; Table 1), and preferred position and groupings in the text should be clearly indicated. The author will be required to provide images in CMYK format as TIFF or EPS files at high resolution suitable for printing. As a guideline, images should be submitted at a minimum input scanning resolution of 300 dpi for full colour, 350–400 dpi for half tones, 600 dpi for slides or transparencies, 800 dpi for simple line and 1200 dpi for fine line illustrations. Please note that the final reproduction quality is dependent on the quality of the original illustration. The author must obtain written evidence of permission to reproduce images (in all formats, in perpetuity and in all geographical regions worldwide) from the copyright owner for the use of any illustrative matter in the journal and will be liable for any fee charged by the owner of the image. The caption should include relevant credit of the permission of the copyright holder to reproduce the image. For more information please see the Advice for Authors regarding copyright and permissions.
Online Colour
Several Maney journals are printed in full colour. In these cases authors may submit colour artwork according to the appropriate guidelines. For all other journals authors are able to pay for the use of colour and will be able to view pricing and make payment via ManeyTrack, Maney Publishing's web-based production tracking system. Log-in details for ManeyTrack are supplied via email to the corresponding author once his/her paper has entered production.
How will the Editorial Manager™ online submission, tracking and refereeing system benefit me?
The Online Submission and Refereeing System that Maney has adopted provides a number of benefits for authors:
Please note, however, that even for journals without a proprietary, web based submission system, the administration is efficient and accountable, and the journal Editors make every effort to keep authors informed of the progress of their submissions. For more information about Maney’s policy regarding peer review please click here.

The stage of your paper is displayed under current status.
I am submitting to a journal that uses the Editorial Manager™ submission system, what happens when my paper has been accepted?
Once a paper has entered production, the corresponding author will receive log-in details by email for ManeyTrack, Maney Publishing's web-based production tracking system. Via ManeyTrack an author is able to view the production stsatus of his/her article at any time, and also has the option to place orders for offprints, issue copies (if the journal has a print offering) and to make an article open access via Maney's MORE OpenChoice offering.
Approximately three to four weeks after this the corresponding author will receive PDF proofs by email for checking. Instructions for proof correction will be supplied within the email which contains the proofs. Corrections should be kept to a minimum and authors may be asked to bear the cost of excessive changes, other than typesetting errors. For those journals which follow a Fast Track workflow, papers will appear on Fast Track approximately seven to eight weeks from acceptance, providing you meet the time scales outlined in the email which contains the proofs. Each journal has its own turn around times. Fast track is accessed via IngentaConnect.
What is Fast Track?
Some of Maney’s Material Science and Medical journals have a Fast Track facility. When papers have been accepted for publication by the Editor, they are typeset, proofed and posted in the Fast Track area of the online journal, and can then be downloaded and read by subscribers, and referenced using the DOI (Digital Object Identifier).
The production process is the same as for all other journals, except that Fast Track papers are unpaginated. Once the article has been assigned to a journal issue, it is removed from the Fast Track area, paginated, and then posted back online as part of a numbered issue.

Requests for such permission must be addressed to Permissions Section, Maney Publishing at permissions@maney.co.uk. In all cases, acknowledgement must be made to place of original publication.

As a contributor, am I eligible to a discount on Maney titles?
Yes, all authors are entitled to purchase the individual issue that they have contributed to at a reduced rate. Information about how to do this will be sent to you with your proofs along with information about how to purchase offprints of your article should you need them (in most cases authors are sent eprints of their article after publication, except in the case of Neurological Research). It is also possible to purchase single issues after publication by contacting subscriptions@maney.co.uk.
For many journals an individual subscriber rate for a full year is available for a journal and contributors can purchase this at a reduced rate in the year that they are published. In some cases where Maney publishes the journal on behalf of a society an individual rate will not be available, but membership to the society will always be available for individuals and this includes a subscription to the journal. For more information, please visit your journal’s homepage in the list here or contact subscriptions@maney.co.uk.
Do I need to use a language-editing service before submission?
Submissions are vetted for quality of written language and may be rejected on these grounds. Maney recommends that any non-native English speaking author who is not confident of their English language skills ask a native English speaker or professional language-editing service to review their manuscript before submission. This is not mandatory but will help ensure that journal editors and reviewers fully understand the academic content of the paper.
Use of an editing service does not gurantee that your paper will be accepted for publication. A decision will be made following the usual peer review process.
NB: Some Maney journals publish in languages other than English. Authors should check carefully prior to submission of their article the languages accepted for publication for each title.)
For information about language editing services and discounts for Maney authors, please visit www.maney.co.uk/languageediting.
