Publishing with Maney

To publish a journal with Maney is to form a partnership, with the aims of the journal, its parent society, editors, readers, and authors paramount in the relationship. No two publishing agreements are the same; each is individually developed. This fundamental approach of responding to the needs of our partners, instead of imposing an off-the-shelf formula, has won us many friends. It is a matter of pride on our part, and satisfaction to our clients. Many of our contracts have now been renewed not once but twice in their history.
Experience
Maney members of staff have gained their knowledge and experience in some of the largest publishing companies, and our versatile and growing team is supported by a widening international circle of consultants and freelance colleagues, technology partners, agents, and distributors. We are committed to training and development, and participate regularly in publishing, library, and academic meetings. This page will give a flavour of our business philosophy and strengths. Much more can be learned from the other pages in this website, the journals, and our staff.
Key clients
Maney has formed enduring partnerships with many societies. The English Goethe Society is the oldest client, having worked with us since 1947. The Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA), now with seven journals and three book series, came to us in 1963. We have published the journals of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining since 2002. Other clients include the Energy Institute, the Royal Photographic Society, Pharmaceutical Users Software Exchange, the Costume Society, the Society for Medieval Archaeology, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
Copyright and ownership
When we publish for a society, the ownership and copyright of its journal are retained by the society. The contractual agreement gives Maney a license to exercise the publishing rights for a fixed term, normally five years. Maney manages the copyright for the benefit of the society, and in turn handles sublicensing and requests for permission to re-use published material. We also own a number of journals that we have either launched ourselves or acquired from other companies.
Editorial development and control
Societies maintain intellectual control over their journals through the appointment of Editors and Editorial Boards who are responsible for the refereeing process and quality control. Maney does not interfere in such matters. At the same time, journals evolve as their subjects and communities grow, and we can advise on the positioning and development of journals when invited to do so. We support editorial diversity, whether by the publication of review articles, thematic issues, or commissioned editorials. Our interest is to develop the quality of the content for the benefit of society members, researchers and other library users.
Maney is introducing an open access option to some of its journals. For a fee, authors can decide that their articles will be open access on publication.
In 2010, Maney’s response to the changing requirements and expectations of our customers (authors, researchers, academic libraries), and those funding bodies which support research and scholarly communication, is to introduce a service to publish open access papers in our journals. MORE OpenChoice is compliant with existing open access mandates and will in future accommodate new mandates that may be required by sponsor organisations. Maney journals currently qualifying for MORE OpenChoice will carry the MORE OpenChoice symbol on the journal homepage. Where funding bodies mandate it, final versions of MORE OpenChoice papers will be deposited in nominated repositories with links through to a PDF “print” version accessible from our hosting platforms, IngentaConnect/Highwire. For more information please click here.
No-one involved in editorial decision-making of papers (neither editors nor peer reviewers) will be notified of an author’s request to publish an open access paper. Authors will only be offered the option once their paper has been accepted. This removes any potential charge of bias in assessing the merit of funded papers.
Financial security
Every journal contract that we have signed has improved the financial return to the copyright owner, often beyond all expectations. Onerous administrative and production tasks are removed from the society, while international marketing, online publishing, and enhanced production standards are provided. Fair contractual agreements that support editorial offices and a royalty to societies are put in place at the outset. An annual page budget is agreed, and all costs are borne by Maney.
Active international marketing
Regular promotion of a journal brings many benefits. It increases the number of readers, which in turn increases the journal’s citation rate. It increases the number of submissions, thereby giving the Editor more choice in the selection of articles. As we raise a journal’s international profile, librarians are more likely to renew their subscription, and new orders will be placed. The paid circulations of many of our journals are growing, in contrast to the publishing industry trend. We achieve this with carefully designed publicity material that highlights key aspects of each title: the editorial team, the best papers published, the impact factor, and the route to online access. This material is mailed to named specialists from prepared lists, distributed in parallel publications to society memberships, and included in delegate packs at conferences.
Maney exhibits at several major international conferences throughout the year such as the American Library Association’s Annual Meetings, the International Congress on Medieval Studies, the Materials Research Society (MRS), Materials Science & Technology (MS&T), the American Society of Oriental Research (ASOR), and the Modern Language Association (MLA) Annual Convention, where our marketing literature is available to a wide range of academics, industry experts, and librarians.
We produce annual marketing plans, devised by our marketing team in discussion with Editors and society officers, and assign significant budgets to each annual campaign. Supporting this are extensive website entries for each journal (with useful external links and discursive aims and scopes), subject catalogues, and well-received material like our annual newsletter, News@Maney. Our E-marketing software allows us to promote our journals via email in order to increase online usage.
Production quality and status transparency
Maney-branded publications have a long-standing reputation for quality of production. Production workflows at Maney are matched to the copy flow and publication requirements of individual journals in order to maximise efficiencies throughout the production process.
Copyediting is a publisher’s responsibility, and we combine computerised systems for the ‘pre-editing’ and formatting of text with textual editing by professional sub editors. Paper, printing, and binding are always of a high standard. Quality of reproduction is assured with those of our journals that are illustrated. We have weighed the benefits of printing in full colour and seen the dramatic improvements in presentation in titles such as Textile History, The Cartographic Journal, and The Journal of Orthodontics. All colour figures are provided online at no extra charge. Our journals are printed on sustainably sourced paper using vegetable-based organic inks.
Maney invests in new covers and textual designs and appreciates that journals are read online as well as in print. Digital printing is employed to facilitate the publication of ‘niche’ journals with circulations and turnover that other publishers would find uneconomic. Editors and authors are supported by Production Editors who work consistently with the same journals and who aim to make the actual process of producing a journal in print and online as smooth and as timely as possible.
Academic Editors are given access to ManeyTrack, Maney's web-based production tracking system. Via ManeyTrack Editors are able to view, at any time, live information regarding their journal's issue production status and scheduling details. Correspondng authors are also supplied with secure log-in details in order that they may view live article status.
Electronic publishing
All Maney journals are published in print and online [visit our Online area here], and we partner with IngentaConnect for electronic delivery. ‘Fast track’ online publishing in advance of appearance in print is offered for many titles so that papers can be viewed and downloaded as soon as they are proofed and corrected. Every institutional subscriber is entitled to online access — and actively encouraged to maximize that access. The online version of each issue is posted in advance of the distribution of the printed copy, and the online list of contents offers free sample content and trial periods. We, and Ingenta, offer statistics on usage which are COUNTER-compliant. The COUNTER project (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources) has developed international standards so that publishers, libraries and others can compare statistics from a variety of sources in the knowledge that these are being generated consistently.
Maney is a member of the CrossRef project, a collaborative reference linking service used by participating publishers to enable readers to follow links from an article's references to the online content of the cited article, if that article is available in electronic format. A researcher clicking on a reference link will be connected to the corresponding journal or publisher's website, showing a full bibliographic citation of the article and, in most cases, an abstract. The complete text of that article will be available through the appropriate mechanism. This hyperlinking ability increases the visibility of journals that use the CrossRef system.
All journals joining Maney’s list are published online [visit our Online area here], and any existing online archives transferred. We have begun to digitize journal back volumes, and in 2010 the subscription price of these journals includes access to the entire archive.
Electronic licensing
We have developed our MORE (Maney Online Research E-journals) Collections to allow libraries, library consortia, and multinational organisations to purchase our full list of journals in any or all of our three subject groupings: History & Humanities; Materials Science & Engineering; and Healthcare and Biomedicine. Purchasing journals as packages has become a popular way to acquire content. Libraries can offer more content than they would otherwise be able to buy, bringing new journals to the attention of much wider audiences.
Some Maney journals are also sublicensed to full-text aggregators like EBSCOHost, which in turn supply journals to a market that would not normally purchase full-price subscriptions, such as colleges that teach to first degree level only. Maney also contributes appropriate journals to projects like HINARI that deliver journal content free of charge to academic institutions in those countries with the lowest per capita income worldwide.
Service to Editors and society officers
To every Maney journal is assigned a Managing Editor, Marketing Executive, Production Editor, and Customer Sales and Service Executive. Journal Editors work closely with Maney staff.
Behind this four-strong team are the full resources of the company.
Peer review
Maney is committed to high-quality peer review in all its journals, and we have stimulated improvements to the quality of all our journals. With greater choice of articles, Editors are able to be more selective. Peer review is managed by the editorial office of each journal. In order to support journals that have significant numbers of submissions, Maney has adopted the Editorial Manager™ (EM) software as its online submission and peer review system. Each journal’s EM website is configured to the appropriate workflow and offers authors and editors real-time information on the status of their paper. The implementation of EM has resulted in a significant reduction of the time from submission of a paper to the decision on acceptance. For more information about peer review with Maney please click here.
International Editorial Boards
We regard Editorial Boards as an important resource for journals and have encouraged international appointments. Beyond their role as referees and subject advisers, we seek board members’ advice on marketing and conference attendance. Members of boards are always supplied with free access to their journal, in either print or electronic format.
Supporting our authors
Effective peer review is a key requirement of authors. Our Editors provide quick decisions and fruitful feedback so that papers can be revised and improved. Proofing, in the form of PDF files, is straightforward and efficient. Live article production status can be viewed at any time via ManeyTrack , Maney's web-based production tracking system.
Authors can post the post-prints (defined as the peer reviewed, revised and accepted versions, but prior to copyediting and typesetting by Maney) of their articles on personal and institutional websites or repositories. Pre-prints (defined as the submitted article prior to completion of the peer review process) may also be posted, but should always be replaced with the post-print once the article has been finally accepted. Authors will receive an Eprint of their final published paper upon publication of the issue that they may circulate to colleagues but may not make available on their own website or any institutional or subject specific open access repository. However, Maney does understand that on occasion authors will be required to post a copy of the final published article into a repository of a funding body or similar organisation if they have been in receipt of financial assistance. In such instances, permission to post the Eprint will be given upon receipt of supplementary documentation from the author detailing the specific funding body and their requirements.

Abstracting & indexing (A&I)
We recognise how important citations are to authors. All eligible Maney journals are included in Scopus and Web of Knowledge (Science or Social Science Citation Index) and we encourage journals to follow legitimate strategies to raise impact factors. All journals are submitted to appropriate A&I services. Language titles are included in the MLA Bibliography, and most medical titles in MEDLINE.
Global reach
The market for Maney titles is worldwide: here, we illustrate how we support two key markets in addition to our presence in Europe.
America
It was vital that, as Maney developed its journal list, we supported our North American customers, editors, editorial board members, and authors with a local office, and in 2000 we opened our customer service facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts (click here for full address of US office). Information on Maney’s titles is always available from this office, which acts as a forwarding address for mail sent by internal Canadian and U.S. mail, and has a vital role in promoting our journals, and ensuring maximum renewal rates from the library community. In 2007 we appointed an American Executive Publisher to work with North American clients and prospective customers. We have marketing and distribution networks for our books in America under which they are immediately available through online bookstores and library suppliers, and promoted at subject-specific conferences.
China
Maney was one of the first publishers to establish electronic licensing agreements for China, and a very significant number of academic institutions within the People’s Republic now have access to Maney’s technical and medical journals. An agreement with the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information in Beijing offers access to the entire online files of these journals. In addition, Maney has agreements with the main Chinese subscription agents to import its journals and has seen a significant increase in the number of copies bought for Chinese libraries in the last five years. Maney supports this market with active marketing at the Beijing Book Fair, meetings of Chinese librarians, and appropriate subject-based scientific conferences. We also have a Chinese-language website that provides full information on the submission of articles and access to the journals.
Distribution and subscription administration
We have a state-of-the-art subscription system which manages over 30,000 subscriptions from almost every country in the world, dealing directly with subscribers and with several hundred subscription agents who place orders on behalf of libraries. Interlocking systems (EDI) between these agents’ and our systems ensure accurate and speedy annual renewals, while we actively pursue late renewing subscribers throughout the year by mail, email, and telephone. We have smoothly transferred to our system the subscriptions the journals previously handled by societies themselves or by other publishers. We normally mail printed copies of our journals by air; replace undelivered issues at no cost; and maintain a substantial archive of back volumes.
New journals
As scholarship and research advances, emerging subject areas require new journals and Maney has launched several journals in the last few years, including: Energy Materials, Family & Community History, and Tribology: Materials, Surfaces & Interfaces. In 2009, Bubble Science, Engineering & Technology and The Historic Environment have been launched. New proposals are always welcome and investigated carefully.
Book publishing
Maney publishes about forty books a year in a number of long-established, prestigious series associated with societies whose journals we also manage. The Legenda series, which we publish with the Modern Humanities Research Association, is one of the most important for European language and literature research.
Locations
In addition to our U.S. office, we have two offices in the United Kingdom. Our Leeds office is located in a former restored textile mill, while we have an office in central London in Carlton House Terrace very near the Royal Society and the British Academy. Visitors are most welcome at either location [click here for our contact details].
Going further
If what you have read persuades you that Maney can offer you, your journal, or your society, a responsive, rewarding publishing environment, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact either Mark Simon, our Publishing Director (m.simon@maney.co.uk), or Kimberly Martin, Executive Publisher (k.martin@maneyusa.com). We will meet you in your office or ours, or at a conference (future Maney attendances can be seen in the subject “Spotlights” on our website - see the right hand menu for links).
It may be that your journal is currently contracted to another publisher. Nevertheless we would be happy to discuss the range of our services now, so that when the current contract is reviewed, you have a clear picture of a viable alternative to your existing arrangements. We are proud of the service Maney Publishing offers the scholarly and professional community. We hope you will give us an opportunity to present our skill and experience in journal publishing in a period of transition and change. We would be pleased to provide you with the names and addresses of society officers with whom we work so that you can obtain references for the experience, skill, and motivation of Maney staff, and the success of the publishing arrangements that we have entered into.
New Proposals - Further Information
In order to evaluate a proposal for a new journal, we would need the following:
1. Main title and subtitle, with some alternatives.
2. The initial number of issues, and the number and type of articles that might be published (reviews, commentary, primary research, methods, educational summaries, etc).
3. A short Aims and Scope of up to 150 words and a longer discursive one of 4-5 paragraphs (the former might appear in the journal itself, the latter would be used for marketing and on the Maney website).
4. The name and address (postal and email) of the proposed Editor and Co-editors.
5. The names of people who might serve on the Editorial Board (subject to confirmation).
6. A comprehensive review of the competition with the salient features of each title and the reasons why the new journal would be different.
7. A list of topics on which the journal would seek to publish and a list of past papers that it might have published.
8. At least seven headwords that could be used for a database search to assess the number of potential authors for the new journal.
9. National and international conferences that potential authors and subscribers would attend.
10. The prospects of the journal being adopted by a professional or scholarly society. In such circumstances, would the journal be included in the membership fee?
11. The possibility of receiving sponsorship for some of the start-up costs.
12. The names of societies from which we might be able to obtain mailing lists for promotion.
13. The names and addresses of at least six referees that would be able to give us an assessment of the merits of the proposal.
